EMDR in Phases 2 and 3: Reprocessing and Reintegration in Complex Trauma (van der Hart et al., 2014)

During this study group, we will explore van der Hart, Groenendijk, Gonzalez, Mosquera, and Solomon's 2014 paper, Dissociation of the Personality and EMDR Therapy in Complex Trauma-Related Disorders: Applications in Phases 2 and 3 Treatment. We will look at what it means to reprocess a traumatic memory as a two-level act of synthesis and realization, and at how the standard EMDR protocol is modified to keep complexly dissociated clients within their window of tolerance. We will give particular attention to the practical craft of Phase 2, including the contraindications that call for more stabilization, fractionated reprocessing, and deciding which parts are present and which stay in safe places, before turning to Phase 3, reintegration and the grief work of recovery.

Upon registration, participants will receive:

  • A detailed summary of the reading
  • A copy of: van der Hart, O., Groenendijk, M., Gonzalez, A., Mosquera, D., & Solomon, R. (2014). Dissociation of the personality and EMDR therapy in complex trauma-related disorders: Applications in phases 2 and 3 treatment. Journal of EMDR Practice and Research, 8(1), 33–48.
