This training explores the complex, well-documented relationship between trauma and addiction, highlighting how traditional addiction treatments have often reinforced shame and pathologized clients’ survival parts. Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of how early and ongoing trauma impacts neurobiology, coping mechanisms, and the development of substance use disorders, as well as how to avoid causing further distress or perpetuate shame in addiction recovery. Through a combination of lecture, discussion, and case material, participants will explore practical frameworks and trauma-informed strategies for assessment and treatment planning with this population. Integrating EMDR strategies, IFS principles, and advanced resourcing, participants will learn clinical adaptations that enhance trauma-informed, stigma-reducing EMDR practice. They will come away equipped with deeper knowledge and clinical tools to integrate into their EMDR work.

Evaluation Form: EMDR Tools for Trauma and Addiction: from theory to practice
This training provides 2 clinical continuing education credits / 2 contact hours. To receive a certificate of completion and CE credit, participants must attend the live training in its entirety, participate in the interactive components, complete the post-test, and complete the course evaluation.
Interactivity: This is a live, interactive training delivered via Zoom. Participant interaction is ensured through real-time discussion, question-and-answer, and clinical case discussion throughout the session.
Attendance: Attendance is verified via the Zoom platform (individual join/leave records). CE credit requires live attendance. The session recording and course materials remain available to registered participants for 90 days following the training as a review resource; viewing the recording does not substitute for live attendance and does not earn CE credit.
Certificate delivery: Certificates of completion are issued electronically through the Thinkific platform after live attendance, post-test, and course evaluation have been verified.
This is an advanced-level training designed for licensed and pre-licensed mental health professionals — including social workers, psychologists, and mental health counselors — who have completed an EMDRIA-Approved Basic EMDR Training and work with clients experiencing co-occurring trauma and substance use.
This program is open only to clinicians who have completed an EMDRIA-Approved Basic EMDR Training. Please note that this training is not an EMDR Basic Training. Attendees who are only partially trained in EMDR are not eligible to receive EMDRIA Credits.
Manhattan Center for Trauma Studies, ACE Provider #2256, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 7/9/2026–7/9/2027. Social workers completing this course receive 2 clinical continuing education credits.
