I am so appreciative of this training still being fairly newer to EMDR. It's easy to get pigeon-holed into one approach after training and adhering strictly to things. This was incredibly helpful in learning additional ways to obtain information needed for reprocessing and allowing us as therapists more flexibility with a very complex modality.

Learning Objectives

This training focuses on practical strategies for identifying and organizing EMDR targets to create effective treatment plans with complex clients. Participants will review the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and EMDR’s three-pronged protocol. Participants will identify key informational areas that shape treatment planning and then define first-order and the “2-method approach” for target selection (de Jongh, ten Broeke, & Meijer, 2010). Additionally, participants will explore ways to collaborate with clients through shared decision-making, ensuring that target selection aligns with therapy goals. Participants will come away with tools to organize and sequence targets in a way that meets clients’ unique needs and supports successful trauma processing.

  • Review the AIP model and three-prong protocol of EMDR therapy

  • Identify four informational plateaus that inform EMDR case conceptualization and treatment planning

  • Understand the implementation of first order target identification methods

  • Define the 2-method approach for target identification

  • Explore how EMDR targets are organized within a three-pronged treatment plan

  • Establish shared-decision making when selecting targets with client
